Neutron Decay

A tritium atom, like any hydrogen atom, normally has one electron hovering around the nucleus. This is not the electron that is emitted in beta decay; the beta particle is made specially for the occasion, from the decay of a neutron. You can think of it this way: one neutron disappears and is reincarnated as a proton and an electron.
