Copper (Cu) is an exception; it has ten 3d electrons and only one 4s electron. In reactions, copper can give up either one or two valence electrons. Some later transition metals, such as silver (Ag), follow a similar pattern, with only one outer s electron rather than two. They're still enough like the other transition metals to be included in the group.
