Electric Fields and Liquid Crystal Molecules There's one slight difference: unlike water molecules, the "french fries" don't start out with positive and negative ends. The electric field, when it's turned on, pushes charge along each molecule, so that positive charge accumulates at one end and negative charge at the other. The molecules then tilt in response to the field.
